Bloomsburg is a quaint college town along the north branch of the Susquehanna River in Columbia County in Pennsylvania. Bloomsburg’s earliest development was associated with the Indian period of American history. A reminder of those first inhabitants is the legacy of colorful names such as Susquehanna, Catawissa, Nescopeck, and Shickshinny. The early local economy was stimulated by an influx of settlers after new roads were built and the opening of the North Branch of the Canal. Also, iron ore was discovered nearby and was a flourishing industry for three-quarters of a century. At the turn of the century the iron industry and agriculture base gave way to new businesses including textiles and other manufacturing ventures. A section of the town has been named a National Historic District where much of the beautiful architecture has been refurbished. Enjoy the history of the buildings and landmarks of the town by printing the brochure and taking the walking tour. In the center of Main Street is the Town Fountain at Market Square originally installed in 1892. In 2002 it was refurbished to its original appearance. When it is illuminated at night the sight is breathtaking! Here is the history of the fountain. Across from the Town Fountain is the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors Monument that was constructed in 1908. The monument is 60’ tall, and statues on the four corners represent the infantry, cavalry, artillery, and navy. The farmers market is near the square where local farmers sell their produce. Nearby is the public library. The downtown business district has experienced change throughout the years and remains vibrant due to the foot traffic from the university. At one time Bloomsburg was a combination of crossroads in a country village but it has become a textile town catering to a national and international market. It is a leader in the cut-flower industry, canning industries, printing and metal fabricating. Its proximity to Interstate 80 with two interchanges has resulting in economic expansion. The history of Columbia and Montour Counties can be found here. Bloomsburg is an ideal place to live, work and raise your family.
